The Lavochkin La-5 was created, when the troubled LaGG-3 was mated with the radial M-82 engine. The result was the first fighter, that was an even match for german fighters. The La-5 was further improved with two additional versions. It was one of the new aircraft, that helped the V-VS to gain air superiiority over the eastern front.
The La-5FN was further improved and became the La-7
